Project – Cath Lab at Bon Secours Hospital
Location – College Road Cork
Client – Bon Secours Health System Ltd.
Architect – O’Connell Mahon Architects
Role/Service – Civil & Structural Engineering

The Bon Secours Hospital Project Team identified a central location within the hospital complex to locate a new Cath Lab. The location, which is over existing diagnostic and clinical facilities provided significant structural engineering challenges as the existing building was deemed to be incapable of supporting both an additional floor required for the cath lab and its preparatory, recovery and ancillary areas together with a significant plant room over.

It was also an imperative that the construction work associated with the provision of the additional accommodation would not impinge on the day to day operation of the hospital facilities under.

Horganlynch designed a piled structural steel vierendel truss framework to span over the existing building forming both the roof over the Cath Lab and floor of the plant room over.

The piled foundations had to be constructed within two narrow alleyways and the structural steelwork had to be lifted in over weekend periods requiring significant logistical planning by the contractor John Sisk.

The pitched tiled roof of the existing building was not removed until the new enveloping framework was fully roofed and wall cladding complete to maintain weather tightness of the operating clinical facility below.

The project was delivered on time within a very tight programme.
