Project – Cork Institute of Technology Library
Location – Rossa Avenue, Bishopstown, Cork
Client – Cork Institute of Technology

This project was for the construction of a new purpose Built Library and IT Building at the Cork Institute of Technology Campus. This was the first significant building constructed on the campus since the construction of the original Regional Technical College on the site.

The architectural solution for the library, as developed by De Blacam and Meagher consisted of a large curved study area block with a series of wings off it housing multi storey bespoke book storage shelving. The structure is primarily load bearing diaphragm masonry walling with reinforced masonry lined piers supporting reinforced concrete slabs with precast fair faced soffit. The elemental exposed finishes coupled with the lofty internal spaces provide a dramatic, airy learning space.

This Building won the RIAI Gold Medal Award for Architecture.
